BMW's motorcycles are recognised by the boxer engine, with its two cylinders sticking out to the sides, and by the shaft drive. The formula has been so consistent that classic BMWs are among the easiest old bikes to live with.

The milestones

  • 1923, the R32. BMW manufactured its first motorcycle in 1923, the R32, with a flat-twin boxer engine and shaft drive. Max Friz is among the notable names in BMW motorcycle history.
  • 1973, the R 90 S. A high-performance boxer, built on the same engine family as the other bikes of the time.
  • 1980, the R 80 G/S. The first BMW with the monolever rear suspension, which became a model line of its own.
  • 1983, the K100. The first K-series production bike.

What to know when buying

  • Final drive. Shaft-drive bikes need their final drive oil changed and the rubber boot checked. See chain and final drive.
  • Old rubber and electrics. Check hoses, boots and wiring on any bike of this age. See brakes, tyres and ageing rubber and electrics and ignition.
  • Which year. The boxer engine changed over the decades, and so did the frames, the brakes and the suspension. Know the exact year from the frame number and the papers. See frame and engine numbers.
  • Origin. BMW's German home market has the strongest supply. For German papers and the H plate, see the German rules.
