The history: why this Whizzer is special

The Whizzer is more than just a moped – it is an icon of the post-war era. In 1939, American Breene Taylor came up with the revolutionary idea of mounting an auxiliary engine onto an ordinary bicycle, and the Whizzer was born. After World War II, its popularity exploded, especially in Europe, where people were looking for affordable and lightweight transportation.

This particular example, however, is not an American Whizzer, but a rare variant manufactured in Luxembourg. In the 1950s, the Luxembourg factory produced a number of Whizzers under licence for the European market, with their own specifications. The ladies' model – recognisable by its low step-through frame and elegant design – was especially popular with women who wanted a stylish yet practical means of transport.

What makes this model extra special is the 138cc side-valve engine, type L300. This engine was a step more powerful than the standard Whizzer blocks and delivered smooth torque, ideal for the hilly European landscape. The L300 is known for its reliability and easy maintenance – a dream for the enthusiast who likes to tinker. Due to the limited production in Luxembourg, these ladies' models are extremely rare today, and they only seldom appear at auctions.

Condition – honest, original and complete

The motorcycle we offer here is a time capsule. It is completely original and complete – no missing side covers, no later replacement parts. The paint and frame carry the true patina of over seventy years, with beautiful, authentic rust spots that tell the story of a long life. This is not worn-out damage, but character – the so-called patina that collectors truly appreciate.

Mechanically, the motorcycle is surprisingly healthy. We have started it and it runs and rides without any significant issues. The engine runs smoothly and responds well to throttle. Recently, new belts, new bearings, and new seals have been fitted, making the drivetrain and engine technically fresh. That means you can ride it straight away – though we do recommend replacing the tyres first.

The tyres are old and show dry-weather cracking – they are still serviceable, but for safety it is better to renew them. The fuel tap has a small drip, a common ailment that can be easily fixed with a new gasket or a tap overhaul. Furthermore, the electrics (lights, horn) have not been tested, but given the complete condition, the wiring and switches are present.

Market comparison – an affordable entry into a collector's item

To give an idea of value: a fully restored Luxembourg Whizzer L300 typically fetches between €5,000 and €7,500 at auctions and in the trade, depending on rarity and restoration quality. American Whizzers are already sought after, but the Luxembourg version is even more exclusive.
